Chapter 38

There was confusion and questions until Masuda translated, then the car was slowing rapidly and pulling off to the left of the narrow road, Anna getting out and clearing the way for Kovac even before the vehicle came to a complete stop.

Kovac didn’t follow. He went for the woman officer’s pistol and got it as she moved to launch herself out. She had both hands to her door, her body leaning away from the gun. An easy grab, as these things went.

Kovac dealt with the safety and aimed at the driver. He ordered the woman officer out, then called for Anna to get in the front seat.

She did, closing the door.

The woman officer was left out on the road.

‘Tell him to drive,’ Kovac said.

Masuda translated for the driver. It took a while. There was a back and forth, then what sounded like clarification.

The driver eventually shook his head. He had said his bit, seemingly, and he wasn’t willing to say a word more.

He wasn’t driving, either.

‘If it’s about his partner, tell him she’ll be fine. Tell him to drive.’

Masuda translated again. But he obviously added a little extra again too because the driver unholstered his pistol and handed it backward.

He passed it on the door side, along the side of the car, directly to Masuda. Out of reach of Kovac.

Kovac went for this new pistol with his free left hand but immediately realized his error. Masuda had reached forward with his right hand. He was going to get the gun in the narrow space between the front seat and the car’s chassis, and the front seat was going to protect the exchange and thwart Kovac.

Kovac had miscalculated.

Masuda got hold of the pistol and pointed it at Kovac. There was a single, pressurized pop.
